Jobs for the Week: Decluttering Accessories

Simplify your style and make room for your favourite pieces.

If You Have 5 Minutes

  • Quick sort: Open your jewellery box or accessory drawer and pick out anything broken, tarnished, or missing a pair (hello, lone earrings!). Set them aside to repair, recycle, or let go.

  • Daily go-to check: Identify your most-worn pieces—scarves, belts, necklaces, or sunglasses. Make sure they’re easily accessible, and set aside anything you haven’t used in months.

If You Have 30 Minutes

  • Group and assess: Lay out all your accessories—jewellery, hats, scarves, belts, sunglasses, etc. Group them by type and evaluate each piece. Ask yourself:

    • Does this fit my current style?

    • Is it still in good condition?

    • Do I actually wear it?

  • Declutter thoughtfully: Donate or sell items you no longer wear but are in good condition. For damaged or outdated pieces, consider recycling them (many jewellers accept scrap metal).

  • Organise by use: Use hooks for necklaces, trays for bracelets, and small boxes for earrings. Store scarves in a basket or on hangers, and neatly roll belts to save space.

If You Have Longer

  • Deep clean and repair: Take the time to polish jewellery, untangle chains, or repair any broken items you love. Refresh your accessories so they’re ready to wear.

  • Create a capsule collection: Narrow your collection to versatile, high-quality pieces that you love and wear regularly. This will make it easier to accessorise without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Upgrade storage: Invest in organisers like a jewellery stand, scarf hanger, or sunglasses tray. Make sure everything has its place to avoid future clutter.

Did You Know?

Many UK charity shops accept accessories like jewellery, hats, scarves, and belts to support fundraising efforts. Alternatively, specialist recycling programmes can often take damaged items.

This Week’s Challenge:

Declutter 5 accessories that no longer fit your style or serve your needs. Share your newly organised collection with us, or let us know your favourite accessory that’s staying put.
