Jobs for the Week: Decluttering the Garage

This might be a big task for some of you but don't panic. This week we are decluttering and organising the garage.

If your garage or storage space is a disaster area, just focus on one area at a time. This way you are less likely to get overwhelmed or distracted. You may wish to set a timer too so it doesn't take over your entire day.

Let me know how you get on and tag me in any progress photos.

If You Have 5 Minutes

  • Quick scan: Walk into your garage and remove any obvious clutter—empty boxes, broken items, or things that clearly don’t belong.

  • Floor space check: Clear walkways and tidy items that have ended up in piles or blocking shelves. Even a small reset can make a big difference.

If You Have 30 Minutes

  • Group and sort: Choose one section—tools, sports gear, seasonal items, or DIY supplies. Group similar items together and assess what’s still needed and what’s not.

  • Let go of excess: Be realistic about duplicates, old paint tins, unused tools, and forgotten projects. If you haven’t touched it in over a year, consider recycling, donating, or binning.

  • Use vertical space: Shelves, hooks, or wall racks can get things off the floor and make the garage feel more spacious and usable.

If You Have Longer

  • Full reset: Empty as much of the garage as possible. Sweep the floor, dust shelves, and check for damp or damage. Then rehome only the items that serve a clear purpose.

  • Donate or responsibly dispose: Pass on bikes, tools, and equipment in good condition to community groups or charities. Take chemicals, batteries, and paint to a recycling centre.

  • Zone your space: Create clear zones for storage—tools, household overflow, outdoor gear, or seasonal decorations. Label boxes and stack them safely.

This Week’s Challenge:

Declutter five items from your garage that you no longer use or need. A clear garage can give you room to park, work, or simply breathe.
