Jobs for the Week: Decluttering Reusable Shopping Bags

I am yet to go to a house where this category of stuff is not an issue.

I've seen more of them than you can possibly imagine.

Yep, I'm talking about reusable bags.

We've all been there. You go to the shops, you forgot your bags, you buy a few more and they join the expanding collection.

This week it is time to say goodbye!

If You Have 5 Minutes

  • Quick count: Gather all your reusable shopping bags from the kitchen, car, cupboards, and anywhere else they may be hiding. If you’ve got more than you realistically use, it’s time to let some go.

  • Sort by condition: Check for any bags that are torn, stained, or unusable. Recycle fabric ones if possible and bin any that can’t be salvaged.

If You Have 30 Minutes

  • Categorise your bags: Separate them into everyday use (small foldable bags for quick shops), weekly shop (sturdy totes or cooler bags), and specialty bags (wine carriers, extra-large bags).

  • Keep only the best: Choose a reasonable number to keep based on your shopping habits—too many just add to clutter! Consider keeping a set in your car and a few by your front door for easy access.

  • Donate extras: If you have excess bags in good condition, offer them to friends, family, or a local food bank. Many charities and community shops also welcome spare bags to pass on to customers.

If You Have Longer

  • Create a storage system: Use a designated bin, basket, or hook to keep your reusable bags neatly stored. Fold or roll them to save space, and avoid stuffing them into each other (it only leads to more mess).

  • Plan for reusability: If you often forget to bring your bags, place a reminder by your door or set a phone alert before heading out. You could also keep a compact foldable bag in your everyday handbag or backpack.

  • Commit to conscious use: Reduce future clutter by being mindful of taking new reusable bags at checkouts. Stick to the ones you already own.

Did You Know? Many UK supermarkets have plastic bag recycling bins where you can drop off old or damaged reusable bags for proper disposal. Some even offer incentives for returning used ones.

This Week’s Challenge: Declutter your reusable shopping bags and streamline your collection to just what you need. Share your best storage tips or let me know how many bags you’ve cleared out.
