Jobs for the week - decluttering surfaces

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

This week we are decluttering surfaces. That could be work surfaces, coffee tables, bed side tables, etc.

You have hopefully already removed the rubbish and the obvious junk. If you find any more this week, declutter it as you go through.

We are focusing on the most visible areas of your home first as it will give you some obvious and noticeable improvements. This in turn will keep you motivated to continue with the process.

A reminder here. The aim of decluttering is to make the space better than it started. If only a handful of items leave your home, that is still an improvement. Keep going.

If you have 5 minutes

Tackle one small area of a surface. Remove rubbish and obvious junk first - take it to the rubbish / recycling / donating box straight away. Remember that anything removed will be an improvement.

If you come across anything which is obviously in the wrong place, take it to where it should be immediately. Avoid making piles as this just adds to the clutter and to your workload.

If you have 30 minutes

Focus on a larger area. Remove rubbish and obvious junk, and take out of place items to their rightful space. If there is no space where you need to put it, declutter something

there to make space for it. Avoid getting into decluttering that area completely though.

NOTE: at this point we are still focusing on easy wins. If you come across sentimental items or items you are not yet ready to part with, put them aside to be dealt with later.

If you have longer

Work your way around your home focusing on visible surfaces. Follow the steps outlined above.

NOTE: do not make piles! I've said this already but it is important. Making piles will feel good and make you feel productive. If you don't take those piles to their correct places straight away, they will end up becoming clutter which you will have to go through again.
